Growth and Ascension:
Within every fracture lies the potential for growth and renewal. The more severe and terrible the fracture, the greater the possibility of growing from it, as well as the challenge involved.
In order to do this, a person must choose life. Despite everything.
To take the pain, the loss, the sorrow and transform them into light.
To rise instead of becoming a victim. To remain upright and vertical with the face up and forward.
Our society is made up of those people. In order for it to grow, we all need to choose together to look forward and upward from the pit that has opened up within us and threatens to swallow us into it. Only in this way can we grow. Like the plant that bursts from the ground and seeks the rays of the sun.
The proposed monument is a compass that reminds us of the direction from within the fracture.
It reminds us that we can choose, each of us, and together as a society, to rise.
It reminds us of the unity that can be grown when we look together in the same direction despite our differences.
And the fracture will always accompany us and remind us of the choice and direction so that we do not become victims.
The monument is designed as a broken obelisk and a bridge passes through it. The obelisk does not stand on a podium but emerges from a depression in the ground and points to the sky. It shows the direction. The shadow it casts is a reminder of time.
The person who comes through its gates enters and descends alone on a moderate and narrow bridge that converges into the space of unity.
This space is at the heart of the broken obelisk. The fracture is also the place to rise and unite.
At the top of the obelisk is the inverted vertex that holds the broken parts. Its tip is sunk in the center of the space of unity and reminds us of the roots in the ground from which growth begins. From there, we exit and ascend back on the bridge and return to society.
The monument's surroundings constitute an inviting and shaded public space that sanctifies life and allows for sitting and staying between the two main axes on campus, but also a focal point and orientation that is visible from many places on it in order to serve as a constant reminder and moral compass for all its visitors.
